Commissioning Work

If you are new to commissioning work with a blacksmith, a very good article on the subject ‘Working With An Artist Blacksmith’ by English blacksmith Peter Parkinson may be found here.

Arriving at a Design & Pricing a Project

If you have a design in mind I can work with that or I can send sketches and ideas. Whichever way it works, you come first, my aim is always to make ironwork that delights you and satisfies your vision.

I can give rough estimates for work if a design is very similar to one shown here on the website, although no two jobs are quite the same.  If it is a completely new design, I will work with you on the design and price from the resolved design.

The design stage is your opportunity to convey both the practical requirements and visual characteristics of your new piece of ironwork.  My system is this:

  • free site visit within a 2 hr drive
  • design time charged at an hourly rate OR fixed budget in advance
  • when the final design is largely complete I can price the job
  • design fees due on completion of design work whether or not the job proceeds, the design is then the client’s property
  • on receipt of a deposit & signed drawings & proposal, the project is scheduled.

A Note about Prices

A price per foot represents the average price per foot across the whole of that particular project.  The price varies according to the client’s specific design, the price of steel at the time and configuration of horizontal or stair rails. Prices given do not include installation.  I can install the work or deliver it to the site for your contractor to install.  I charge time and materials for installation and will usually arrange for a small crew to be present.

Areas we serve

Installation projects generally occur within the tri-state area of Western NC/North GA/East TN encompassing:

NC: Murphy, Andrews, Hayesville, Asheville, Cashiers, Highlands, Franklin, Waynesville

GA: Blairsville, Blue Ridge, Hiawassee, Dalton, Atlanta, Marietta

TN: Chattanooga, Ocoee, Cleveland

I can also build railings and other architectural ironwork for areas further afield and we ship smaller items such as furniture, firescreens, firetools and home decor items anywhere by arrangement.
